Astronomy Picture of the Day

Thor's Helmet versus the Seagull
A tall starscape appears to have two bright nebulas. The large one at the top is colored mostly red and is known as the Seagull Nebula. The small one near the bottom right is known as Thor's Helmet.
Image Credit & Copyright: Nicolas Martino, Adrien Soto, Louis Leroux & Yann Sainty
Seen as a seagull and a duck, these nebulae are not the only cosmic clouds to evoke images of flight. But both are winging their way across this broad celestial landscape, spanning almost 7 degrees across planet Earth's night sky toward the constellation of the Big Dog (Canis Major). The expansive Seagull (top center) is itself composed of two major cataloged emission nebulas. Brighter NGC 2327 forms the head with the more diffuse IC 2177 as the wings and body. Impressively, the Seagull's wingspan would correspond to about 250 light-years at the nebula's estimated distance of 3,800 light-years. At the lower right, the Duck appears much more compact and would span only about 50 light-years given its 15,000 light-year distance estimate. Blown by energetic winds from an extremely massive, hot star near its center, the Duck nebula is cataloged as NGC 2359. Of course, the Duck's thick body and winged appendages also lend it the slightly more dramatic popular moniker, Thor's Helmet.

@purple-surgicalborg
"seasons greetings doctor banner" nebula gently carried a few gifts from the guardians
Rocket got him some tech
Nebula got him some knowere sweets
Drax of course had gifted one of his warrior daggers
Peter had gotten him a flashy green and purple jacket
After the last couple of days, spotting Nebula felt like a relief- although the various bright-colored boxes caused Bruce Banner to furrow his brows.
"What's all of this..? I, uh, don't have any gifts for you though.." The brunet was already looking around the safe house, leaving the door open so the other could enter. He was back in a few moments a robotic-looking flower.
"Thankfully, I have plenty on tinkered projects. Here." Bruce managed a little grin, holding out the gift with two hands. "And I, uh, could probably find some other gadgets for the rest?"

A shame we can’t see nightscapes like this with our naked eye. That being said, seeing the “backbone of night” (the Milky Way) from a truly dark location is an awe-inspiring sight!

Seagull Nebula over Pinnacles’ Peak Image Credit & Copyright: Dheera Venkatraman
Explanation: The bird is bigger than the peak. Nicknamed for its avian shape, the Seagull Nebula is an emission nebula on the night sky that is vast, spanning an angle over five times the diameter of the full moon and over 200 light years. The head of the nebula is catalogued as IC 2177, and the star cluster under its right wing is catalogued as NGC 2343. Consisting of mostly red-glowing hydrogen gas, the Seagull Nebula incorporates some dust lanes and is forming stars. The peak over which this Seagull seems to soar occurs at Pinnacles National Park in California, USA. The featured image is a composite of long exposure images of the background sky and short exposure images of the foreground, all taken consecutively with the same camera and from the same location.

We just discussed this picture of the seagull nebula in my astrophysics class yesterday.
On the lower right ride of it’s wing, you can see a really bright star, but there’s actually a cluster of bright stars in the area above it, stretching all the way up the wing. You just can’t see them because there’s a cloud of dust blocking the view of them. If you look at the dark space above the wing, you can discern pretty well where the dust cloud extends.

Literally me with almost any storyline: but couldn't there be dragons?
Fantasy: obviously. Put them in a cave, give em all sorts of hoards. Non-violent fantasy? Easy, give me library dragons or furnace dragons, dragons who are glorified seagulls or dragons who are town guardians, wrapped around a city and slumbering - a living city wall.
Sci-fi: robot dragons are the clearest option. What would I do if I had unlimited access to mechanical brilliance and parts? I'd make a dragon to defend my evil villainous lab. BUT WHY STOP THERE? Give me genetically modified creatures who resemble dragons. Test tube dragons. Aliens who are dragons. SPACE. DRAGONS. Dragons who live in nebula's, dragons born from stars, give me dragons born from supernovas who guard their collection of young stars. Dragons who communicate over radio waves and hum to the universe. Like... guys...
AND WHY STOP THERE?
Romance? Dragon eats a love interest. Guaranteed solution to every love triangle ever.
Historical fiction? There's fiction in the name. Add a dragon.
Nonfiction? Dragon analogies. Give me someone who feels like a dragon. This often coincides with the same people who feel like ravens or magpies so just give them a lil love of fire and you're golden.
Mystery? Dragon clue. Dragon symbolism. Dragon metaphor. DRAGON MURDER - GUYS THE INHERITENCE OF A DRAGON WOULD BE HUGE -
Thriller? Same as nonfiction. Give me a dragon character. Someone who walks through fire to survive or hordes money through selfishness blah blah blah - so many options guys.
Horror? Bro forget killer clowns, give me scary-ass flying lizards that mimic speech and scurry around on the ceiling and shed their skin like a mature dragonfly splits out of its juvenile form.
Educational? Everyone learns better when there are dragons involved. Source? I'm right.
Maps? We lost something when we stopped drawing dragons in the oceans or at the world's edge. Put them back. I miss them.
Don't want dragons? We've got drake's, wyrms, drakons, sea lizards, glorified eels, little chameleons with wings, literally anything with scales can be a dragon if you follow your heart. My heart. Whatever!
Ending point: add dragons
#dragon contemplates life#And dragons#writing#reading#Dragons#I am like a chef#But a bad one#Sprinkling dragons in your writing like paprika#Like#Okay it's good but have you added SPICE#And everyone else is like stfu we hate paprika you know this -#Sprinkle it in regardless
